Kotter Press is the United States imprint of Kotter Editorial — an independent publishing house founded in Brazil more than a decade ago, with a sister imprint in Portugal. From Orlando, we extend the work of the house into the English-speaking world, translating contemporary writers from Brazil, Portugal, and the Spanish-speaking Americas, and welcoming new authors writing in English from within these traditions.

We are a boutique editorial operation, not a content factory. Each title in our catalog has been chosen for its intrinsic literary quality — for the kind of writing that survives the news cycle and rewards a second reading. Our list is small by design. Our editing is close. Our books are built to be kept.

The Kotter house has published more than a hundred and fifty titles across its three imprints. Among the authors on the family list are recipients of the Prêmio Jabuti finalist citation, the Biblioteca Nacional Literary Prize, the Natália Correia Prize, and the Guerra Junqueiro Prize. At Kotter Press, we draw on this catalog while building a distinctly American list — one that honors translation as a literary art, and that treats Spanish and Portuguese not as peripheral languages but as central to the literature of the Americas.

What we publish

Literary fiction, poetry (often in bilingual editions), essays in the humanistic tradition, and works of psychoanalysis, political theory, and literary criticism. We are particularly interested in writing that crosses borders — geographic, linguistic, generic — and in voices that have not yet found their American readership.

How we work

We work directly with our authors and translators, with no agents and no committees. Editorial decisions are made by readers, not by algorithms. Our production is handled in-house, from cover design to typesetting, drawing on the typographic engine and editorial systems developed at Kotter Editorial over the past decade.
